Posted: 10 Jul 2006 Saving The Dolphins Dear Sir or Madam, I am sure you are aware that still in some parts of the world Dolphins and Whales are still being hunted for food. As with most Western countries this act has been outlawed in our waters, and many conservation projects are in force at present to try and protect these wonderful creatures. They need your help, there is an annual slaughter of many types of Dolphins and Whales by the PRO WHALING nations, this alone still disgusts me as I am sure it disgusts you too. As much as we all feel for the dolphins on this forum, it's probably isnt the right forum to post this kinda message on, but good luck with your dolphin and whale help scheme. Posted: 10 Jul 2006 It kinda amazes me that anyone would think we were not aware of these issues.. Dear All, Please be aware of nations that routinely flout their wildlife laws. These acts are carried out by both nasty developer types (actually most are not that bad) and even 'wildlife conservation' organisations. Some people even kill our protected wildlife with sticks whilst out rambling. Please also support the banning all 4x4 as clearly their transmission system makes them much more evil than any other form of motorised transport, blah blah... Gemma Fairchild Supporter: Land Rover

Mines an 1800cc engine, just had a new catalytic converter put on and the emissions ANd the fuel consumption is less than most 4 door saloons. I wished that people wouldnt just jump on bandwagons! i've had so many stickers put on my windscreen that I'm killing the planet and all that tosh. FACTS please ladies and gentlement, dont just tar everyone with the same brush. My car has about as much in common with a Hummer, or V12 Vogue as a mini has to a Bentley. Yours on a soap box. Personally, I think that canned tuna used to taste a lot nicer when it contained a bit of dolphin, but I still think that their plight deserves the constant exposure that it generates. As for 4x4s... Vrrrrrmmmmm vrrrrrrrrrmmmm really must get me one of them Don't you just hate the anti-4x4 brigade Rob, we have two 300Tdi Discos for work and pleasure, both routinely cross two counties returning 30 mpg, carry tons of felts and get nice and muddy off-road in the persuit of our business. Give 'em a bath though and go to Tescos and people target you like you have the plague. Both are over 10 years old - now in my view that is the way to save the environment, make a proper car with a chassis that runs forever and will do anything you ask of it. We also have a 200Tdi converted Rangie we are restoring, that is 23 years old. Must get a V12 though on LPG, just can't get away from that lovely sound

Posted: 11 Jul 2006 Heh, I too have three 4x4s, although 9 out of 10 Joe Public wouldn't recognise them as such, as they are 4x4 saloons. I don't think the estate qualifies as environmentally friendly though...with its 300bhp V6 twin turbo...cough, Although it is the fastest way to move a washing machine on the roads, hence causing less congestion :P Although they are 15+ years old ! BTW Robert, has the head gasket gone yet on your Freelander...or do you have that joy to look forward to ? Steve Langham - Chairman

Posted: 11 Jul 2006 Steve, that did make me laugh!! Yeah, had me a overheat fest 2 months after I got the ***** thing! Cost me ú800.00. Head skimmed, new water pump, metal shims on the valves, you name it. Still, touch wood, its been ok since then (two and half years ago) and I've been to Devon in it about twenty times....If you know, Lynton/Lynmouth/Hells Mouth/Mortehoe, you know the type of hills. Freelanders have a terrible name now though, just over the overheating thingy. Shame, comfortable car otherwise. Cheers Rob RobV |

V12? Overfinch did some V12s, but that's a bit minority. LandRover never fitted one, though they were rumoured to be planning an Aston V12 powerplant for the new model. It never happened as somewhere between he bean counters and a PR department that thought a V12 "gave out the wrong message" they decided to 'settle' for a twin supercharged Jag V8 instead.

However, I have an ISUZU tdi bakkie, and although not 4X4 I have taken it to places you would think twice about taking a landie (especially a freelander; rubbish; they can't take the knocks over here) Vroom vroom vroom - sing along now  'I get my kicks on Route 62' |

I will keep to my estate diesel which gets almost double the mileage of any 4x4 - up to 55 mpg - though it takes a beating on sites plastering stickers over peoples cars yeah thats the way to do the revolution! throw out yer banners and molotovs - takes me back to uni when you saw National Front stickers everywhere on lamp posts, bus shleters, telephone boxes (next to the calling cards) - the anti nazis use to put up their stickers aswell cor blimey heavy stuff!

Posted: 11 Jul 2006 well we do have a diesel estate as well for crunching miles, we have had two contracts this year though that stipulated availability of 4x4s for site access and yes we did need it... any way how can you beat this:

Despite all, I miss my Freelander and thought it was a comfortable, well-designed car. Just a pity it didn't go. We now have a Shogun Sport which has - touch wood - been very reliable. I too get the 'Buy a smaller car' posters stuffed on my windscreen, so I transfer them straight to the nearest Ford Ka. While they were so busy meddling with my windscreen wipers, surely they would've seen that my car is full of horsey gear - it is a working vehicle; it has to be big to pull a trailer with a 600kg nag in it. The alternative is to buy a car and a lorry... surely that would be more damaging on the environment? However, I disgress... |

Posted: 30 Jul 2006 Mollie, I agree, the toylander is soooo comfortable to drive, it's a shame that landrover didn't put more efforts into the testing stages of the engine etc. Same went for the Triumph Stag a few years back! If they'd have got the engine right on that car, it would have been a world beater. I haven't heard any bad reports about the Shogun though, other than you can't see around the bl**dy thing if your stuck behind one towing a horse box Lol lol!!! I'm due to get rid of my Freely soon.....Wait for it...I'm getting...... No, not another freely, rather a Nissan navara truck!! ha. Nothing like posing while youre herping. Rob RobV |
